How is black maca different from ordinary maca?
Written by WIGNA EditorialUpdated 1 min read

In short
Maca is a root grown above 4,000m in the Peruvian Andes, and it comes in yellow, red and black roots. Black maca is the rarest of the three, so it is sorted out and used on its own. WIGNA Black Maca holds the equivalent of 20,000mg of black maca root in one capsule.
- Traditionally, maca is grown at 4,000–4,500m in the central Peruvian Andes
- The same plant grows yellow, red or black roots
- Black maca is the smallest harvest, so it is sorted separately
- WIGNA Black Maca: 500mg 40:1 extract = 20,000mg black maca root
Where does maca grow?
Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is cultivated on the plateaus of the central Peruvian Andes, 4,000–4,500m above sea level. Strong sun, big swings between day and night, and constant wind shape a root that locals have long eaten as food.
Yellow, red, black — does colour matter?
Roots from the same field come up in different colours. Yellow is the most common; red and black are harvested in smaller amounts.
Root colour is not a separate variety. It varies from plant to plant, even in the same field, so the roots are sorted by colour after harvest. Black, the smallest harvest, is set aside on its own.
| Colour | Notes |
|---|---|
| Yellow | The most common harvest |
| Red | Harvested in smaller amounts |
| Black | Smaller harvests, sorted separately |
